Confined to his apartment by a broken leg, photographer L.B. Jeffries (Jimmy Stewart) finds himself passing the time by observing his neighbors through the window. With few other options for entertainment in that era, he begins to form theories about their lives, focusing especially on whether Thorvald (Raymond Burr), another resident, might have murdered his wife. Hitchcock presents this scenario from several different perspectives. Jeff could be viewed as a keen observer solving a mystery, or conversely, as an intrusive voyeur whose anxieties could unfairly impact others. These contrasting viewpoints are brought up by the people around him, including his nurse (Thelma Ritter) and his fiancée (Grace Kelly, who would later become Princess Grace of Monaco). Ultimately, concrete evidence resolves the Thorvald matter, but Jeff’s reasons for his actions remain unclear. Hitchcock weaves in several smaller storylines—though they are presented very simply, limited to what Jeff can see from his window.
