This romantic drama doesn’t entirely fail, as the final portion manages to make up for some of its earlier shortcomings; however, it does suffer from a plot that wanders aimlessly. The film assembled actors who seem promising based on their reputations, but their performances don't quite live up to expectations. John Wayne, playing Captain Jack Stuart, finds himself in trouble after his ship is destroyed by men supposedly employed by King Cutler, portrayed by Raymond Massey. His superior, Commodore Devereaux, played by Walter Hampden, isn’t pleased and consequently demotes Duke, assigning him the task of escorting Ray Milland, as Tolliver, to Key West. Simultaneously, Paulette Goddard appears as Loxi, who is practically betrothed to Stuart, and quickly catches Milland's attention. Wayne then has to demonstrate that his ship was intentionally sunk while also preventing his girlfriend from falling for his deceitful competitor. The narrative feels rather formulaic and disappointing—Goddard does inject some appeal into the movie, but Milland (along with his dog trick routine) becomes tiresome over time, and neither Wayne nor Massey deliver performances that are characteristic of their usual abilities. While there are enjoyable underwater sequences near the end, the story itself is simply too simplistic and foreseeable. It’s visually vibrant, at least, and it includes a monkey!
