Going into “Reality Winner,” I had no prior knowledge of the actual events depicted, so seeing the title along with “FBI” led me to anticipate something akin to “Slumdog Millionaire.” That expectation proved completely off base. The film centers on a woman—Sydney Sweeney—who held a position within the U.S. government translating documents related to Iran. The story begins when she returns home and discovers that "Garrick" (Josh Hamilton) and "Taylor" (Marchánt Davis) have parked outside, armed with a warrant to search her house, car, and belongings. She seems puzzled by their visit, particularly because they appear more preoccupied with the welfare of her pets than anything else! Eventually, they enter the home, and the interrogation commences. Initially, there’s a palpable tension in this process, enhanced by its reliance on the actual interview transcript, creating a believable portrayal of how persuasive these agents can be. Since the story is based on historical events, suspense is absent; however, I believe Sweeney gives a noteworthy performance as the situation escalates. Still, it feels like the narrative drags on too long, and the filmmaking style comes across as disjointed. The film does offer some insight into the power of the U.S. government when it perceives an offense, which creates moments of discomfort for the viewer. It’s not a particularly striking drama, and a theatrical release isn't essential, but it would be perfectly acceptable to watch on television while prompting reflection about what constitutes the "public interest."
