It’s a really enjoyable film that I plan to watch again and would suggest to others. The central idea is wonderfully bizarre: an ordinary woman hoping for marriage finds herself unwillingly entered into a deadly competition where people hunt humans, and she proves to be surprisingly capable. Samara Weaving delivers a superb performance in the part. I recognized a few familiar faces—Melanie Scrofano (from Wynonna Earp), Adam Brody, and Andie MacDowell—but beyond Melanie, the rest of the cast doesn’t particularly make an impression, although she was certainly well-suited to her role. The action is contained entirely within the boundaries of the estate, but even with that limitation, the sets are exceptionally well done and contribute significantly to the visuals, whether depicting the house as expansive or as a cleverly designed snare. I'm struggling to articulate exactly what makes it so good; the script quality is excellent and the setting impressive, however, the performances are only adequate aside from Samara’s work, and there aren't any major special effects. Perhaps it’s the restraint in the effects that are used, combined with the attention to detail present in both the scene presentation and the dialogue choices. The movie certainly establishes a captivating mood for viewers. If you don’t mind blood, gore, or violence, I think you’ll have an enjoyable experience.
