If you like my Spoiler-Free reviews, please follow my blog :) I went into the theater knowing next to nothing about this film. In fact, Ready or Not wasn’t even on my radar until recently. I figured it would be a standard and inexpensive horror movie, but a lot of positive buzz convinced me to check it out. Luckily, I wasn't let down! Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett created a silly yet enjoyable film with an amusing idea that hasn’t really been explored in such a gruesome and bloody way before. It’s one of those movies where the only potential problem has to do with what viewers expect. You might not like this story if you don't accept its playful tone. If you are hoping for a movie full of truly frightening scenes, that isn’t what you’ll find. Nor will you get a film with a dark atmosphere and heavy moments. This is a common issue audiences have worldwide: unrealistic expectations. The trailers make it clear that Ready or Not was always presented as a horror-comedy emphasizing the simple fun the concept offers, so don't expect something the filmmakers didn’t intend to deliver. Keeping that in mind, the film certainly provides what it promises. It’s a fast-paced game of hide-and-seek, with suspenseful moments and genuinely funny scenes. The short running time doesn’t allow for much investment in each character, but honestly, it's not really necessary here. Samara Weaving plays the bride who must evade capture while her new family searches for her. Everyone performs well overall, but Weaving truly shines with fantastic reactions to various situations, consistently eliciting extra laughs. Despite exploring a unique premise, the plot follows pretty standard and even predictable patterns, which is somewhat disappointing. The ending is unexpected in its execution, though the final outcome is still fairly easy to guess. There are many cheesy moments; some work well, but others aren’t as effective. Surprisingly, the score stands out because it's unusual for a movie like this to have such an impact. It provides some laughs with clever lyrics and helps build suspense in the more intense parts. The film is also mostly well-shot and takes place primarily in one location, something I always appreciate. Ultimately, Ready or Not achieves exactly what it set out to do. It offers a fun and entertaining 90-minute hide-and-seek game unlike anything we've seen before. Its R rating allows the filmmakers freedom with the amount of blood and gore shown, which ultimately leads to a shocking and hilarious conclusion. Samara Weaving is excellent as the lead character, essentially carrying the entire film. Is it cliché? Yes. Is it formulaic and predictable? Yes. Is it cheesy? Absolutely. However, this movie never aimed to be a groundbreaking achievement in its genre. It simply wanted to provide good entertainment. And it does. Rating: B-
