Raymond (played by Ewan McGregor) shows up at his step-brother Ray’s (Ethan Hawke) place to inform him of their father's death. Feeling obligated, Raymond insists on going to the funeral – primarily to confirm the man’s passing – and eventually persuades Ray to join him. They learn that they are set to inherit a small sum of money, but with the stipulation that they must dig his grave, place the coffin inside, and then fill it in themselves. Despite their general dislike for this father, they agree to fulfill the condition. As the burial draws near, it becomes clear that he had quite an ability to sire sons; one was fathered with Lucia (Maribel Verdú), who remained living with him until his death, and another pair of twins unexpectedly appears. When the story focuses on just the two brothers, there’s a real sense of closeness and connection – we begin to understand not only how unpleasant their father was, but also the lasting effect he had on his children and their own troubled marriages. However, when more characters are introduced, the narrative loses some of its strength, resulting in a somewhat confusing collection of individual stories all revolving around a man who isn't present to be judged directly. There are some appealing jazz performances – Ray is shown to be quite talented with the trumpet – and the film has an attractive visual style, but ultimately it feels a little underwhelming.
