Desperate Siege. Rawhide comes from director Henry Hathaway and screenwriter Dudley Nichols, featuring Tyrone Power, Susan Hayward, Hugh Marlowe, Jack Elam, George Tobias, Dean Jagger, and Edgar Buchanan. Sol Kaplan and Lionel Newman composed the music, with Milton Krasner handling the cinematography. The story centers on a stagecoach station employee and a female passenger who is traveling with her infant niece; they become captives of four escaped prisoners planning to steal the next day's gold delivery. This Western film is based on the 1935 crime movie Show Them No Mercy, and it exemplifies what makes for a well-crafted Western. Krasner’s black and white photography is gorgeous, the cast delivers solid performances, and Hathaway’s direction is skillful; the hostage situation develops gradually, with character development unfolding steadily before culminating in an explosive finale. The characters are consistently engaging, although they might feel familiar to those who have seen many Westerns. Power embodies a hero in progress, while Hayward portrays a spirited and energetic woman—I'm curious to see if romance blossoms between them. The convicts represent the usual lowlifes, with Marlowe standing out as the intelligent leader burdened by companions he finds contemptible, and Elam is memorably repulsive as a lustful troublemaker. Themes of avarice, sexual tension, and danger for Hayward and her child maintain a high level of suspense, demonstrating some care in exploring the convicts’ relationships. Unfortunately, Kaplan's musical score frequently feels overly sentimental, even inappropriately cheerful given the story's thriller elements. Despite these distracting musical moments, it remains an excellent Western and is easily suggested to fans looking for something beyond typical low-budget action films. 7.5/10
