It’s a worthwhile movie. Even with an appreciation for its craftsmanship and care, Japanese films don’t really click with me. Perhaps because they differ so much from what we typically see. But despite those differences, one has to acknowledge the skill involved. Akira Kurosawa is a director who demonstrates keen observation and meticulousness, capable of guiding his actors and drawing out exactly what's needed for his vision. This film struck me as more intricate than I anticipated, and I went into it without really knowing what to expect. There’s something satisfying about uncovering something new and allowing yourself to be surprised, isn’t there? The narrative centers on a crime that occurs in the woods; a wealthy nobleman dies, and the movie effectively examines the subtle variations in accounts of events from different characters. However, Kurosawa's exploration of the relativity of truth is something I find myself resisting, preferring instead to believe in the precision and concrete nature of facts. On this point, we simply disagree. Despite my reservations about Kurosawa’s perspective, the script deserves recognition for its simplicity—not simplistic, but clear and direct, consistently presented with a challenging, philosophical approach. The actors contribute significantly to the director's aims, demonstrating dedication and professionalism. I especially want to mention Toshiru Mifune, who delivers another outstanding performance; the rest of the cast is also very good, though I’m not familiar with their names. From a technical standpoint, the film is rewarding in its details. The black-and-white cinematography is notable for its skillful use of light and shadow, along with impressive clarity. Set within a forest environment, it manages to create an atmosphere that's both mysterious and captivating, and the locations are richly detailed. The musical score is also well done, though I didn’t always find it particularly engaging.
