The narrative begins with three individuals seeking refuge within the remnants of an aged gatehouse during what feels like a perpetual rainstorm. Each possesses a personal account concerning the assault on a woman and the subsequent killing of her spouse. The woodcutter, portrayed by Takashi Shimura, was responsible for finding the deceased individual and notifying the proper channels. It was those authorities who then organized a trial where a priest (Minoru Chiaki), the woodcutter, the widow/victim (Machiko Kyô), the spectral form of her departed Samurai husband, and ultimately the infamous bandit "Tajômaru" (Toshirô Mifune) were called upon to provide testimony. We witness representations of these testimonies—each similar yet distinct. The question arises: who exactly were the two victims? Was he a man of integrity and virtue? Was she modest or alluring? Are those offering their accounts distorting what they witnessed or participated in? What elevates this film is that there doesn't seem to be a definitive solution; every perspective appears viable, no one can be fully believed, and following each narrative, it’s easy to accept that the events unfolded precisely as described. The constant sound of rain and a musical score reminiscent of Ravel's "Bolero" accompany us as we examine these various possibilities, featuring outstanding performances from the entire cast, notably Mifune's almost frenzied portrayal and Miss Kyô’s work. Kurosawa manages to convey a great deal within ninety minutes, providing an instructive example of sophisticated and captivating filmmaking—it moves swiftly, is delivered with distinct character, and leaves you feeling suitably frustrated at its conclusion! It's a worthwhile film.
