Kamurai on Rapture-Palooza

5/10 · Jul 21, 2020

It’s an acceptable film, though unlikely to revisit, and I don’t feel comfortable suggesting others check it out. The premise is unusual: religious comedies face a significant challenge. The subject matter tends to be too weighty for those with faith to find amusing, while audiences who simply want laughs usually aren't drawn to stories rooted in religion. This film aims for viewers familiar with and somewhat cynical about organized belief, hoping the casting and script will resonate. I believe they made smart choices when selecting actors; Anna Kendrick and Craig Robinson both deliver strong performances, and the ensemble is excellent, particularly Ken Jeong’s contribution. John Francis Daley doesn't get enough attention, but I suspect it’s more a problem with how his character was developed than his acting ability. The plot revolves around the Rapture, and a recurring gag involves portraying every character as fundamentally flawed, which makes it difficult to find someone to root for. The story quickly shifts into a scenario involving two unlikely heroes facing off against an anti-Christ crime lord, striking a balance between absurdity and genuine humor without veering into over-the-top chaos. I was engaged throughout most of the movie, but I lost interest during the final section. While I enjoyed Ken Jeong’s role, it felt like a missed opportunity, and the conclusion felt rushed; they even acknowledge this themselves. Ultimately, it didn't quite click with me, though I did enjoy myself enough that I don’t regret watching it. Still, there are many other movies out there worth your time.
