The beginning is rough; there’s an awful opening song that’s genuinely uncomfortable to listen to. However, it’s worth pushing through because "Vern" (Arthur Kennedy) begins his quest to find the person responsible for killing his girlfriend during a robbery. Simultaneously, "Altar" (Marlene Dietrich) loses her job singing at a hotel but before that happens, she and “Frenchy” (Mel Ferrer) manage to win a substantial amount of money on a fixed game of chance. The two storylines eventually connect when "Vern" shows up at the isolated ranch now owned by her—a place offering refuge for those trying to evade the law, provided she receives a 10% cut. When she’s dressed for dinner, she wears a brooch that once belonged to the deceased girl, prompting "Vern" to investigate its origin and then seek revenge for her death, which disrupts the fragile balance among his criminal associates. Kennedy isn't particularly captivating on screen, but Ferrer is somewhat more appealing as the forceful enforcer for Dietrich’s tough songstress who has evolved into a criminal mastermind. The musical numbers composed by Ken Darby are fairly forgettable and slowed down the story; still, they do contribute to her character’s appeal—the way she uses it to extract money from those around her. The conclusion feels hurried, but the lead actress manages to keep things on track for ninety minutes, which I found enjoyable even if I doubt I'll recall much of it later.
