This film sticks to a familiar formula: large corporations are portrayed negatively, genetic science is presented as dangerous, and giant creatures are undeniably cool. The plot feels quite unrealistic, the scientific aspects are nonexistent, and most characters besides the main hero come across as unintelligent. Despite these flaws, I found myself enjoying it. I went in expecting to see The Rock and massive monsters causing destruction, and that’s precisely what I received. While the story itself is weak and the science completely absurd—the rapid growth of the creatures defies any scientific explanation—who wants to watch animals grow during an action movie? It's also a strange coincidence that the ape, who happens to be on the good side, doesn’t develop the same huge fangs or other frightening features as the others. As I mentioned, the story is nonsensical. However, once the action sequences begin, they deliver the expected level of over-the-top destruction, which is something Hollywood excels at these days. I genuinely enjoyed it, even when it was undeniably silly. And then there’s The Rock—I really like The Rock. Perhaps I'm old-fashioned, but I appreciate tough heroes with cheesy one-liners. As expected, the military’s attempt to combat the monsters is depicted as incompetent, overly confident in their ability to succeed. Predictably, the monsters prove them wrong. So what's the solution? Well, just use extreme force. Okay, they didn’t actually deploy nuclear weapons, but dropping a MOAB on a major city isn’t far off from that. Seriously, they claimed to have evacuated the city in just a few hours—that’s not plausible. Also, during the fighting prior to this questionable decision, they send in a Warthog, which was at least a somewhat logical choice, but only sent one! What…? And don't even get me started on these creatures simply brushing off a Warthog attack; those planes are designed to destroy tanks. Oh well, here I go again with the science complaints. You need villains, right? Claire Wyden isn’t terrible—the typical corporate executive who cares only about personal gain. However, Brett Wyden is just irritating. He's foolish, incredibly childish, and consistently stupid. Did I mention he was stupid? From his very first scene, I hoped one of the creatures would eat him. He wasn’t eaten, but his eventual fate was quite satisfying. Despite all of this, as I said earlier, I did enjoy the movie. It provided exactly what I wanted: a wild ride of action and chaos. The Rock was great. His “sidekick,” Dr. Caldwell, was fine but easily forgettable. Agent Russell, however, evolved from an annoying government agent into one of my favorite characters throughout the film. The scene where he stops Brett Wyden and then lets him walk toward his deserved end was particularly enjoyable. I also liked the ape; I appreciated how he teased The Rock. An ape giving The Rock the middle finger might seem silly, but it was genuinely funny. Ultimately, if you enjoy movies featuring rampaging monsters, this provides two hours of decent entertainment.
