Wuchak on Rambo: Last Blood

7/10 · Apr 26, 2020

Sylvester Stallone is back as Rambo, who has spent the previous decade residing on a ranch in southern Arizona. When his niece (Yvette Monreal) disappears into Mexico, he must confront a group of criminals to retrieve her. Paz Vega appears as a journalist offering assistance. “Rambo: Last Blood,” released in 2019, marks the fifth and likely final chapter in the Rambo series, given Stallone’s age of 72 during production. The storyline is straightforward, drawing parallels to films like “One-Eyed Jacks” (1961) and “Conan the Barbarian” (1982), and it serves as a satisfactory entry within the franchise, though not quite matching the quality of its predecessor. The film delivers exactly what audiences expect from a Rambo movie: a scenario where one person takes on an overwhelming force for a just reason, accompanied by considerable violent action sequences. Despite accusations of racism, this aspect doesn’t exceed that found in earlier installments. "Last Blood" does not portray all Mexicans as inherently bad, any more than previous films depicted all police officers, Vietnamese people, Afghans, or Siamese individuals as evil. Personally, I would rank this film third among the series, following “First Blood” (1982) and “Rambo IV” (2008). The runtime is 1 hour and 29 minutes, with principal photography occurring in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain. An extended version exists, adding an extra 12 minutes to the total length. GRADE: B
