The phrase "beating a dead horse" feels appropriate when describing this needless and fairly bland third installment. This time around, the withdrawn, central character (played by Sylvester Stallone) is forced to leave his peaceful life in Thailand and travel to Afghanistan, which is experiencing conflict due to the Soviet invasion! The reason for this sudden journey? His former commanding officer, "Trautman" (Richard Crenna), has been taken prisoner while overseeing a secret mission to provide aid to local fighters. "Rambo" needs to act quickly, since the U.S. government is claiming no involvement in this covert undertaking and it seems unlikely that the captive will survive for long under the care of "Zaysen" (Marc de Jonge – presumably, Steven Berkoff was unavailable). There's a good amount of standard action sequences, explosions, and gun battles, but the story feels foreseeable—bordering on propaganda; the conversations are quite ordinary, and it appears to be simply an attempt to maintain interest in the series while Stallone and his collaborators develop something more worthwhile for a future film. It’s not terrible, but it's likely to fade from memory soon after viewing.
