It’s striking how utterly despairing the world Neill Blomkamp built feels; it’s among the most hopeless settings I’ve encountered on screen. I usually struggle to accept stories where a less powerful side triumphs over a stronger one, so the grim reality facing people in Rakka was surprisingly welcome. It would have been nice to get some explanation about the individuals who appeared as potential rescuers at the close of the first installment; they're brought up and then seemingly disregarded, with the narrative shifting its attention to Amir’s ability to foresee events. The visual effects are impressive, which really highlights how awful the Klum’s treatment of humans is depicted in the film. The look of Rakka is exceptionally well-realized, and it’s a place that will stick with me for quite some time.
