I wonder if I'm alone in seeing this as quite similar to “Tobruk” from 1967. The story follows Richard Burton’s character as he journeys far behind enemy lines in North Africa with the mission of demolishing a fuel depot that would otherwise assist in deploying Panzer divisions for Rommel. He was meant to be accompanied by a specialized unit, but due to an error, he ends up with a medic (Clinton Greyn) and his patients who seem incapable of even basic marksmanship. The situation grows more tense when they unexpectedly encounter the Field Marshall himself (Wolfgang Preiss) – though perhaps this could give “Foster” (Burton), a perceptive individual, a chance to view some classified charts? It appears that from this point onward, portions of footage from the earlier film are reused, particularly during what is admittedly the strongest segment. Burton performs adequately but doesn't go above and beyond, and I honestly couldn’t determine Danielle De Metz’s purpose in the movie. The film predictably mocks the shortcomings of the Italian forces during the conflict and attempts to portray Rommel as a refined figure reminiscent of James Mason, but ultimately it feels like just another showcase for a star who seems to have lightened his hair specifically for this role. It's acceptable entertainment if you enjoy war movies, but that’s about it, I'm afraid.
