A man living in Oslo, who works as an archaeologist and has lost his wife, thinks he’s found a clue to the legend of Ragnarok through markings on the Oseberg ship. He joins forces with another person and they set out on a journey to Oksefjorden, far up in northern Norway, where they find a lake said to have no bottom. It seems like something very old and frightening lives within that water. The question is whether they’ll survive their trip. “Ragnarkok,” also known as “Gåten Ragnarok," which translates to "The Riddle of Ragnarok," came out in 2013, and it's a Norwegian adventure film with creatures, showcasing beautiful, isolated Scandinavian landscapes, some basic Nordic stories, and items from the Cold War era. It brings to mind elements of “The Island at the Top of the World,” “Alien,” “Jurassic Park,” and a touch of "Dragonslayer" (1981). However, the characters aren’t particularly memorable, and one plot point feels pretty predictable. Pål Sverre Hagen does well as the lead character, Sigurd, and Sofia Helin is pleasant enough as Elisabeth, though she could have had more to do—and I'm not referring to anything sexual or exploitative. Despite its flaws, “Ragnarok” has enough good things going for it to be worth watching if you’re into this kind of thing. Like "Jurassic Park," it is suitable for families even with the scary parts. The movie lasts approximately 1 hour and 36 minutes and was filmed in Norway (including Vikingskiphuset, Oslo, for the scenes set in a museum), as well as Sweden. The dialogue is in Norwegian, but there are subtitles available. GRADE: B-
