It’s remarkable that Rosamund Pike was drawn to portraying Marie Curie, a figure with such an extraordinary history—the first individual to receive two Nobel prizes—and whose story, along with those of her husband and daughter, holds considerable appeal. However, the resulting film doesn't really do justice to this pioneering woman's life. The filmmakers attempted to balance her struggles as a scientist with the obstacles she encountered in a male-dominated society, alongside exploring her intense ambition and affection for her husband (played by Sam Riley) and family, but ultimately it falls short of being truly compelling. Riley’s performance feels too understated to provide a suitable contrast to Curie's strength and resolve, and while Pike is competent, she’s burdened with dialogue that doesn't quite resonate. The film's visual style and tempo seem at odds with each other, contributing to a sluggishness that prevents it from gaining momentum. I appreciated the effort to incorporate some of the long-term consequences of their scientific discoveries into the narrative—such as the Hiroshima bomb—but this element felt underdeveloped and lacked impact. From a technical standpoint, everything appears satisfactory; the costumes and sets are clearly well-researched and presented. Nevertheless, that’s not enough to elevate this heavy and talky drama. A more captivating telling of the story was achieved in 1943 by Greer Garson. This feels like typical television movie material destined for obscurity.
