Eugenio Derbez stars as "Sergio," a new teacher at an elementary school located in a neglected Mexican town, where his unusual teaching style creates some discomfort for the principal, "Chucho" (Daniel Haddad). The school is struggling and considered among the worst, with teachers incentivized by bonuses tied to student progress. So, it’s easy to understand their frustration when Sergio begins overturning classroom furniture and using the school's water tank to explain density and weight. He needs to motivate his previously unengaged students while also convincing his doubtful supervisor or risk losing his position. The events that follow are rooted in a real-life occurrence, and I believe it would be beneficial if this film were shown in schools. It effectively showcases the significant impact an inspirational teacher can have on young learners, and serves as a reminder to children in more privileged areas about the importance of education—whether with or without technology. This man provides them with a method for self-instruction; problem-solving abilities, teamwork skills, and the understanding that their possibilities aren’t necessarily as restricted as they initially believed when beginning school with little enthusiasm. It also raises questions regarding the inflexibility of rote learning and encourages us to contemplate a teacher's role within communities often limited by conventional wisdom. Is it truly possible for these children to achieve ambitious goals, or are they simply unrealistic aspirations? The interactions between Derbez and Haddad are enjoyable, and the narrative allows viewers to witness some of the key challenges facing these individuals as they mature—poverty, drug use, corruption, and family dynamics all significantly shaping how education integrates into their society. The film moves quickly, and there’s a good balance of entertainment with more profound themes. I would definitely recommend spending two hours watching it.
