Prepare yourself, because Old Nick is on his way! Jack Starrett directed Race with the Devil, a film written by Wes Bishop and Lee Frost. The cast includes Peter Fonda, Warren Oates, Loretta Swit, Lara Parker, and R.G. Armstrong. It’s a Panavision production in DeLuxe Colour, featuring music composed by Leonard Rosenman and cinematography by Robert Jessop. The story follows two couples on vacation who must run for their lives after witnessing a ritualistic killing carried out by people involved in the occult. It's really entertaining—a wild "B" movie perfect for those 70s drive-in audiences that were developing an interest in both the occult and high-speed chases. The film creates a sense of anxiety as these two couples desperately try to avoid capture by Satanists. They face life-or-death situations, constantly unsure who is working with the masked figures, so they feel they must fight on their own. It all escalates into an impressive display of car destruction, culminating in a final sequence that's surprisingly clever and a little disappointing at the same time. Oates and Fonda deliver energetic performances, but Swit and Parker are mostly just cast as women who scream until rescued by the men. This is best enjoyed with plenty of Bourbon and Coke; it’s not something you should analyze for its moral lessons—just relax and try to stay ahead of Old Nick. 8/10
