David Cronenberg directs and stars Marilyn Chambers, Frank Moore, and Joe Silver in Rabid. Rene Verzier handled the cinematography, and Ivan Reitman composed the music. After Rose (Chambers) is caught up in a terrible motorcycle accident, she undergoes an unusual procedure to try and stay alive. But this leads to her developing a craving for blood and a dangerous opening appearing beneath her arm. As the number of victims increases and Rose descends further into madness, the authorities issue a city-wide warning. Cronenberg’s second feature builds on ideas he explored in his earlier film Shivers, focusing on bodily horror and illness but extending the scope beyond a single location to encompass an entire urban area. Working with limited resources once again, Cronenberg delivers a story filled with anxiousness about contagion, sharp commentary, worries about dependence, and shocking imagery; the phallic growth under Rose’s arm is a particularly bizarre creation. Consistent with his usual interests, sex and violence are also examined closely, while his camera techniques demonstrate creativity that helps to compensate for some less impressive special effects. The city's drab appearance reinforces the sense of sickness present in the story, and Chambers provides a compelling performance, though the supporting cast is serviceable. While a straightforward plot and moments where the pacing slows prevent it from being among Cronenberg’s best work, Rabid possesses an undeniable vitality. Seeing it now, approaching forty years since its release, suggests the emergence of a talented filmmaker. 7/10
