Following a disagreement with a colleague at a German meatpacking plant, the somewhat rough "Matthias" (Marin Grigore) goes back to his Romanian village. His wife, "Ana" (Macrina Barladeanu), isn’t thrilled to see him and is raising their young son, "Rudi" (Mark E. Blenyesi). The boy hasn't spoken since experiencing some kind of distress. Matthias needs employment, but the local bakery, owned by "Csilla" (Judith Slate), already has enough workers—many of them are immigrants, including a family from Nepal. What follows is a revealing story about attempting to mend the tensions within this family while also examining how immigration affects small towns where well-paying jobs that allow people to live decently are scarce. It explores xenophobia but with an understanding and almost compassionate perspective, and it also considers the function of religious institutions—which may not be as Christian as one might assume. This community isn't inherently prejudiced, but they can be a bit "not in my backyard," frequently for understandable reasons. I didn’t care for the ending; it felt unfinished and disappointing to me, though the performances from the cast and occasionally powerful writing provide an up-close look at how large-scale political decisions affect close-knit, traditional communities.
