I really feel like this film is another example of how unreliable the ratings from so-called professional critics on Rotten Tomatoes are; at least in my opinion, their system has serious problems. I know I've talked about this before, but it’s something that needs to be repeated. It’s not the greatest movie I’ve ever seen, certainly, but honestly! If you check out the film's page on RT, a large rotten 13% is right there, which leads people to believe it’s a terrible film—and to me, that seems like just nonsense. On sites like IMDb and TMDb, the movie scores around 5.5 out of 10, which isn't amazing but feels much more reasonable. The viewer ratings are at 42%, which also looks bad initially, but when you look closer, the average rating is 3 out of 5 stars, which I’d consider an “okay” assessment. It seems like RT ratings are designed to make almost every movie besides big blockbusters appear unfavorable. Anyway, now that I've gotten that off my chest, let’s talk about the film itself. Personally, I found it quite entertaining, although it could have been improved. There are several funny moments and the special effects aren’t bad either. Jeff Bridges is pretty amusing as the veteran sheriff, though his character is one of the areas where things could have been better. He's meant to be the experienced expert, but often he seems clueless instead. His stubbornness can get a little irritating at times. The plot is fairly simple and straightforward; nothing spectacular, maybe a bit forced, but it’s enough to connect all the special effects sequences leading up to the big finish. The scene involving cumin and the one where Roy stuffs his head with spicy food to try and force someone to talk is kind of a letdown, though. A lot of people have said it's just a copy of *M.I.B.* I don’t think that’s true. Yes, there are similarities, but then practically any movie featuring a veteran, a rookie, and a sci-fi or fantasy theme could be called a rip-off. There are so many movies out there that you're bound to find some common elements; just accept it. As I mentioned earlier, overall I found the film quite entertaining, and my kids really enjoyed our movie night.
