CinemaSerf on Quo Vadis, Aida?

7/10 · Feb 16, 2025

The film portrays events surrounding the siege of Srebrenica through the experiences of UN interpreter Aida (played by Jasna Djuricic) as she struggles to protect her husband and two sons from the advancing military led by Ratko Mladic, portrayed by Boris Isakovic. The designated “safe zone” offers minimal security within a community ravaged by war, and with Dutch peacekeeping forces significantly outmatched and unsupported, Aida realizes that their survival depends on escaping during the evacuation. The movie highlights the disheartening failure of international intervention in response to this tragedy, illustrating how little assistance was provided to civilians confronting racial genocide perpetrated by a manipulative leader, despite requests from UN personnel present. Djuricic delivers a strong performance, effectively communicating not only her family's fear but also the widespread terror felt by ordinary people facing random violence, displacement, and potential death. The film serves as a stark illustration of the responsibilities owed to individuals who risk their safety assisting peacekeeping missions when circumstances shift unexpectedly. Even if these individuals aren’t formally under obligation, there is still an expectation of care that this drama makes clear was neglected. Shot primarily with a close-up, hand-held camera style, the film creates a sense of immediacy and connection to the unfolding events, and the final sequences are among the most disturbing in cinema. While emotionally challenging, it remains a significant viewing experience.
