A celebrated marksman from Wyoming (played by Tom Selleck) journeys to Australia during the 1870s for a job with an Outback landowner (Alan Rickman), but discovers that his assignment isn’t what it seems. Laura San Giacomo appears as Crazy Cora. “Quigley Down Under,” released in 1990, is a Western set within the Australian desert landscape. The film's name implies Quigley could have been a character like Indiana Jones, with future installments sending him to other continents—perhaps “Quigley in Africa” or “Quigley in South America.” Sadly, its performance at the box office prevented that from happening. It doesn’t feel as silly as some of the Indiana Jones adventures, and I found the sense of authenticity refreshing compared to more conventional hero stories. For example, the film acknowledges that personal cleanliness wasn't a priority in the late 1800s, particularly in arid regions of both the Old West and Australia where laundry was uncommon. Selleck is naturally well-suited for the role of a Western hero, as is Rickman portraying the unpleasant villain. Laura San Giacomo brings some laughs with her spirited character; she was 26 years old when filming took place. The movie has a running time of 1 hour and 59 minutes and was filmed entirely in Australia (including locations like Warrnambool & Apollo Bay, Victoria). GRADE: B/B-
