The portrayal of Mickey Rooney as an inexperienced young mechanic who steals money from his job to try and win over a materialistic girlfriend feels believable. However, things quickly escalate when the amount he owes becomes unmanageable, leading him into trouble with law enforcement, his boss, and a truly unpleasant Peter Lorre character ("Nick"). He finds himself pursued by the police for murder before long. Despite its low budget production, the film has an engaging finale, even if it feels somewhat predictable and artificial. The personalities are well-developed and work together to create a thriller that is better than most.
