Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie Turner-Smith portray a couple who are enjoying the early stages of their relationship when they’re stopped by a police officer while driving. The situation rapidly deteriorates, resulting in both she and the officer being shot; he dies as a consequence. They instantly become wanted fugitives across Ohio, pursued by numerous individuals. The narrative feels somewhat manufactured to serve the film's purpose—depicting two innocent African Americans fatally shooting a prejudiced white police officer in what is presented as "self-defense"—but it evolves into something more complex and impartial. The characters are used to highlight extreme behaviors on both sides, prevalent stereotypes, and Turner-Smith delivers a particularly strong performance as the lawyer who struggles with deciding whether they should surrender for a trial or attempt to escape, believing fairness will be lacking. It's a love story interwoven with dark humor intended to make the characters relatable within a difficult situation, and Bokeem Woodbine’s portrayal of “Uncle Earl” offers some insight into the unfolding events as they move toward an emotional, albeit foreseeable, ending that evokes similarities to "Butch Cassidy..." The film subtly conveys the message about not making assumptions, and while it likely could have been trimmed by around thirty minutes, it makes its point with considerable force.
