It involves four people joining forces to organize a benefit concert intended to keep an institution—whether it’s a retirement home, orphanage, or local theater—from shutting its doors. I don't recall encountering something quite like this before. Considering the impressive group of actors involved, I initially held some expectations for it. It’s nice to anticipate something good. However, my hopes weren’t really met. The character played by Billy Connolly seemed flat and didn't quite work, even with the comedian’s natural likability and smile. Cedrick felt exaggerated and didn't contribute much to the film, despite a solid performance from the actor portraying him. I feel like the story and writing were where things fell short, but the performers did their best to make it worthwhile. Billy Connolly’s character was surprisingly effective when he played it straight rather than engaging in playful banter or teasing others. Pauline Collins found ways to be funny even while dealing with episodes of dementia. There were some good parts throughout, and there was a connection between the main characters, but those elements weren't enough to outweigh what I perceived as a predictable storyline and a certain superficiality in some of the roles. As an extra detail, there’s a pleasant touch at the end when they show that several of the minor actors have musical backgrounds themselves, with photos from their past alongside brief information about what made them known.
