The situation leaves "Marya" (Isabelle Adjani) in a precarious position when her husband, "Stephane" (Anthony Higgins), goes to prison for a year due to art fraud. She then receives unexpected kindness from "H.J." (Alan Bates) and his wife, "Lois" (Maggie Smith), who invite her into their home. However, Marya soon notices that H.J. is unfaithful, and while Lois is aware of this, she seems too apprehensive to do anything about it. Marya isn’t receptive to H.J.’s advances and makes it clear she's not interested; however, being a foreigner (originally from the Caribbean) complicates her ability to find work or gain acceptance. Despite several efforts to leave, she becomes increasingly entangled in his manipulative behavior, even after Stephane is released. "Stephane" understands what’s happening, so everyone involved must now decide how they feel about their current circumstances and lifestyle. While the film boasts beautiful cinematography, costumes, and set design, the storytelling feels detached and impersonal. Bates' emotional moments are particularly unconvincing, and Smith’s character lacks depth, essentially portraying a fragile figure with little to do beyond that. Ultimately, Adjani’s performance is also underwhelming; her delivery, combined with the lackluster direction, results in a film where visual appeal overshadows meaningful content.
