Wuchak on Quantum of Solace

6/10 · Jun 11, 2021

This Bond film centers on James Bond’s pursuit of those responsible for the death of a woman from the previous movie, as well as an attack on M (Judi Dench). His investigation takes him across various locations—from northern Italy to Siena, London, Haiti, and ultimately to Bolivia's desert where he confronts Dominic Greene (Mathieu Amalric), a developer of green technology. Greene is trying to secure a desolate area in Bolivia by helping General Medrano stage a coup (Joaquín Cosio). With the CIA seemingly uninvolved, 007 finds himself opposing Greene, aided by a retired spy and two attractive women (Olga Kurylenko and Gemma Arterton). M questions whether she can rely on Bond or if his desire for revenge has compromised him. "Quantum of Solace," released in 2008, marks the second installment featuring Daniel Craig as Agent 007 across five films. I appreciate Craig’s unique take on James Bond and the serious tone he brings to these movies. The main issue with "Quantum of Solace," the 23rd film in the Bond series (including the 1983 non-Eon production "Never Say Never Again"), is the excessively fast editing during action sequences. Consider the opening chase through mountain tunnels from Nice, Monte Carlo, and down to Portofino in Italy; it’s a beautiful area. However, you barely get to see any of it due to the frantic cutting—the camera shifts almost three or four times every second! While the filmmakers likely believe this rapid editing conveys energy, it mostly results in confusion, disorientation, and frustration for the viewer. It wouldn't be so bad if this was an isolated incident, but another fast-paced action scene follows shortly after Bond’s initial meeting with M (Judi Dench). It seems the filmmakers have forgotten that James Bond isn’t just a simple action hero; he’s too intelligent for that—he embodies ultimate coolness. Violence is merely an annoyance to him, something he resorts to only when absolutely necessary. He exists for the mental challenge, the strategic victory, and later, the martini, shaken, not stirred; plus, of course, the beautiful woman. To get through the first 25 minutes of "Quantum of Solace" and actually enjoy it, an average viewer might need a strong dose of caffeine. Otherwise, it’s a reasonably entertaining Bond film with some good moments, such as when Bond and Camille are stranded in the desert after surviving aerial combat, and Olga (Camille) and Gemma (Strawberry Fields) deliver excellent performances. However, the distracting quick-editing during the action scenes significantly detracts from the movie, preventing it from reaching the upper echelon of the franchise. The film’s runtime is 1 hour and 46 minutes, and filming took place in England, Italy, Austria, Spain, Panama (substituting for Haiti), Chile (the Atacama Desert), and Baja California (standing in for Bolivia).
