DanDare on Quantum of Solace

7/10 · Feb 23, 2017

Quantum of Solace faced the challenge of following Casino Royale, a film that revitalized the James Bond series and introduced a younger, more volatile Bond character, earning approval from both critics and audiences. The movie begins roughly twenty minutes after the events of its predecessor, launching directly into a quickly paced but somewhat disjointed car chase. This initial sequence suggests an attempt to emulate the style of the Bourne films; Richard Pearson, one of the editors on this project, had previously worked on a Bourne film. It also underscores director Marc Forster’s relative lack of experience with action filmmaking, as many of the fight scenes are difficult to decipher due to the editing choices made. Production was further complicated by the 2008 writer's strike, which resulted in the movie being started before a complete script was finalized. As a consequence, director and even Daniel Craig reportedly contributed to writing some scenes. This may be why the film has a fairly brief runtime. The plot introduces Quantum as a clandestine organization with far-reaching influence, extending into British intelligence agencies. The story takes place in Bolivia, where conflicts over water resources introduce a political dimension, presenting a pessimistic view of corporations forming risky partnerships with dictatorships to exploit populations and steal natural resources. Despite these shortcomings, Forster delivers some memorable moments, such as the opera scene—a gathering place for Quantum agents that Bond manages to infiltrate. The film’s brevity prevents it from becoming overly long, and Craig's presence keeps the narrative focused and intense.
