The vanishing of planes equipped with covert technology across the world leads "Maj. Hammond" (Ralph Richardson) to suspect foul play. His inquiries, often complicated by his journalist sister "Kay" (Valerie Hobson), ultimately succeed in recruiting an up-and-coming pilot named "McVane" (Laurence Olivier) for a scheme designed to expose and apprehend those responsible, despite initial doubts from the aircraft’s producers. The plot itself stretches credibility somewhat, but the film gains considerable charm from Richardson's unusual – almost spontaneous – acting style. While not directly addressing the audience, much of his performance in this lighthearted spy story seems primarily intended for us (and his patient butler "Blenkinsop" (Gus McNaughton)). This fosters a pleasant sense of closeness, along with a brisk sequence of events and a notably more engaging portrayal from Hobson, who can sometimes seem distant. Even Olivier occasionally sheds some of his typically formal demeanor, although it remains noticeable, leading up to an action-filled finale involving a ray gun, a destroyer, and... Ralph's umbrella! The film blends different types of storytelling, which at times results in a chaotic feel – yet I found myself enjoying it considerably, and would recommend checking it out.
