It’s true that Punisher: War Zone feels like the truest adaptation of the comic book material we’ve seen yet; the graphic nature, intense brutality, and unsettling cruelty are all consistent with what you find in the comics themselves. Ray Stevenson really embodies Frank Castle well. Dominic West doesn't quite work as Jigsaw, but at least his associates seem more capable than those portrayed by John Travolta. Considering this film arrived during the same year as two other major comic book adaptations, Punisher: War Zone does offer something significant: it demonstrates that a woman director is certainly able to create an action movie that’s both relentlessly harsh and genuinely exciting. I'm puzzled why there haven't been more chances for female directors to take on projects like this.
