This movie is a straightforward, sincere, and competently made film on a small scale that fulfills its intentions without disappointing. I recently watched this picture, which some people already consider a cult classic and an illustration of what’s desirable in a low-budget production. I see why they feel that way: it's not a great movie, nor is it the kind I anticipate wanting to revisit frequently, but it works well and delivers on its promises honestly. The script possesses some originality, though it’s limited; the feature length is maintained primarily through the director, Stan Winston—a first-timer—who stretches the material, which does result in a slower tempo, something he attempted to use to build suspense. The story unfolds in an isolated rural setting and centers on a man who seeks vengeance from a malevolent witch after his young son dies in an accident caused by a group of irresponsible teenagers. The cast consists mostly of unfamiliar faces, but I was particularly impressed by Lance Henrikssen’s performance. He's the only actor who consistently maintains a dramatic presence, displays charisma, and delivers work that feels more seasoned. Beyond portraying the grieving father, he also embodies the monster, which is essentially the film’s central figure. There are other actors involved as well, many of them young and relatively inexperienced. Regarding the technical aspects, I want to acknowledge the considerable effort put into Henrikssen's transformation whenever he played the monster. It’s easy to picture how much time was required each time he had to wear that makeup, which itself was exceptionally well-done—truly frightening and detailed. The filming and cinematography were standard, the sets were nicely constructed, and the visual, special, and sound effects are effective, especially given the production's limited resources. The musical score also proved useful, even if it isn’t particularly memorable.
