The film features a reasonably capable group of actors, yet Michael Caine’s performance as "King" isn't enough to elevate it, and after roughly fifteen minutes—once the basic setup is clear—the narrative descends into an unoriginal and commonplace level of ordinariness. The storyline involves a writer who resembles characters from cheap fiction magazines being given the chance to pen the biography of a former Hollywood actor, "Preston Gilbert" (Mickey Rooney), at his Maltese residence. He quickly realizes that his host is being hunted by a hitman employed by organized crime figures. Predictably, he doesn't remain safe for very long, and it becomes “King’s” responsibility to survive while also finishing the account of the unusual "Gilbert." There was promise here—but unfortunately, the plot loses its momentum early on; the comedic elements are infrequent and forced; and despite numerous minor roles intended to maintain interest, everything ultimately fails to flourish. It's not awful, but it’s forgettable.
