"Pulp Fiction," a 1994 drama, thriller, and black comedy from writer and director Quentin Tarantino, centers on two hitmen working in Los Angeles—played by John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson—along with their mob boss and his wife (Ving Rhames and Uma Thurman), and a boxer who gets on the wrong side of the boss (Bruce Willis). The story unfolds in a non-chronological order, but it’s not hard to understand, and the ending brings all the pieces together. The writing is clever, and the film holds your interest even though it runs for two hours and thirty-four minutes. It's visually striking, full of energy, and inventive; it’s no surprise that it had a big impact on films released later. I delayed watching this well-known movie until almost twenty years after it came out because the characters are all criminals or connected to criminal activity. These are people who don’t hesitate to take lives. Their priorities are money and pleasure. I honestly couldn't care less if they destroy each other. But if you can get past that, along with the frequent use of strong language, the film is worth seeing. What makes it worthwhile, besides being an enjoyable movie overall, is its exploration of redemption and the consequences of stubbornness: a person who understands divine favor acts accordingly, while someone who doesn’t just continues on their path to ruin. Once someone experiences grace, they naturally share it with others. There are other great moments sprinkled throughout as well. Travolta and Jackson both do excellent work here. Several other recognizable actors appear, like Harvey Keitel, many in brief roles, including Christopher Walken; not to mention several strong female characters, such as Julia Sweeney (as Raquel), Maria de Medeiros (as Fabienne), Angela Jones (as Esmarelda) and Susan Griffiths (as Marilyn Monroe). IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR a quirky crime drama or thriller, "Pulp Fiction" is an excellent choice. It's outstanding in every respect, including what lies beneath the surface.
