I was genuinely surprised by this movie, because it brought back memories of the kind of rigorous science fiction I used to enjoy when I was younger. The story takes place far in the future, where traveling through space is routine, and introduces us to a father and daughter struggling to survive; they aren't rich, just trying to make ends meet. They work as prospectors, hoping to find something valuable on a planet with an atmosphere that’s toxic, requiring them to wear special suits and filter the air when they go outside. The depiction of this planet feels incredibly authentic. The spores floating in the air are visible, and we witness their dangerous impact; most of the film's events unfold while the characters are suited up to protect themselves from those spores. What really stood out to me was the level of realism—the suits look used, the spacecraft do too, and a lot of their equipment seems cobbled together to function. The performances were strong; Cee (Sopie Thatcher) felt completely natural and believable, and she had good rapport with Ezra (Pedro Pascal), who essentially drove the narrative forward; at times he evoked Nathan Fillion’s style from Firefly. I would have liked a little more insight into their characters' histories, and occasionally I questioned how they reacted emotionally to what was happening, but those are small criticisms of an otherwise outstanding film that I highly recommend to fans of hard science fiction—I certainly loved it! Given the scarcity of genuinely good sci-fi movies these days, I’m giving this one a perfect 5/5; it's truly excellent.
