I honestly don’t know what to make of what I just saw. It’s hard to grasp the experience. The original Alien film presented itself as a creature feature set in space, and while it was an excellent movie—filled with suspense and genuinely frightening moments—at its core, it was simply that: a combination of horror and science fiction. Aliens proved to be an enjoyable action film, but essentially boiled down to Space Marines battling creatures. It felt like another blend of action and science fiction. You could keep listing examples indefinitely, but I believe Ridley Scott is trying to convince fans who are analyzing the Alien series too intensely; it’s simply a series of films, not something akin to "Chinatown." Prometheus went way beyond what worked for the franchise, pushing things too far. The experience was like realizing the lid had fallen off the salt shaker and you'd have to deal with the mess little by little. Ultimately, there wasn’t much substance; all the potential dissolved away. Any positive aspects of Alien and Aliens disappeared, leaving behind what felt like self-important, overly elaborate explanations. It tries to present itself as something it isn't—a monster movie aspiring to be "Taxi Driver"—and its attempts at sophistication are transparent.
