This feels like my favorite science fiction movie since “Galaxy Quest” (1999), sharing with that film a strong, enjoyable narrative propelled by an actor who seems to be continually more handsome and charming as time passes. "Grace" (Ryan Gosling) is the type of engaging science teacher I would have appreciated; minimal textbooks, just gadgets, interesting facts presented in a relaxed way, all designed to keep his young students interested. One afternoon, while leaving, he meets “Eva” (Sandra Hüller), who’s aware of his past involvement with some controversial scientific work and asks him to join an important project with worldwide implications. The sun is fading quickly, and they believe they've found what might be causing it. He soon identifies what he calls the “astrophage,” and finds himself aboard an aircraft carrier in the ocean, working on a potential cure derived from starlight located light years away. Becoming a scientist—an astronaut, that’s another story entirely—and following an unfortunate explosion, "Eva" faces a challenging choice. A separate storyline unfolds on a spaceship far across the galaxy, where a solitary astronaut has formed a friendship with another traveler seeking a remedy for this galactic problem. The two are complete opposites. They don't share a language and can’t even breathe the same atmosphere—but some clever technical tricks, sign language, building models, and simple kindness might just help them find an answer in time? Aside from a few brief appearances by Hüller – including a surprisingly fun karaoke scene – this is largely Gosling showing off how stylish cardigans can be while traveling through space. The script gives him some genuinely funny lines as well as subtle hints of real science; the visual effects are also impressive, but ultimately it’s his approachable personality that makes us laugh and feel emotionally invested almost at the same time as their story moves forward for a couple of hours, blending danger, humor, and the strength of friendship. It looks wonderful on a large screen, and I would definitely want to see another one.
