I decided to watch this film because of Tilda Swinton, an actress whom I greatly admire. She delivers a truly remarkable performance here, and she’s honestly the only thing that made me want to continue viewing it. However, the movie is really difficult to sit through; virtually every central character, along with several minor ones, is completely unbearable. It's possible this was intentional, and I think it probably was, but I generally need at least one person in a story to be someone you can root for—either the main character or those around them. This film provides neither. There are obvious suggestions of a message concerning immigrants coming to America to work, portraying them as inept, immature, unpleasant, self-centered, habitual liars, and lacking any sense of morality. I don’t agree with this oversimplified and obviously flawed perspective. I'm certain that not all immigrants behave in such a way; I would guess very few do. But I can’t entirely blame the movie for presenting it, and that isn’t really why I gave it the score I did. I often watch films that express viewpoints with which I disagree, and if they are handled skillfully and professionally, I can still enjoy them. "Men" is one example; it explores a very pessimistic and anti-male theme, but does so exceptionally well, and I happily appreciate it because of that. This film, though, is just terrible. The central idea is offensive, and the filmmaking itself is amateurish. It makes me think the writer/director might be as self-absorbed and callous as the characters they created; there’s a certain feeling about it. Even though I wasn't able to finish watching this mess, I can’t give it one star. Tilda Swinton deserves better than that. So, two stars. Steer clear of this one.
