Dan, the writer played by Jude Law, enjoys evenings spent chatting online with men while his girlfriend Alice, portrayed by Natalie Portman, is away. One evening, he orchestrates a meeting between doctor Larry, brought to life by Clive Owen, and a woman named Anna, promising them an encounter at the aquarium. The eager physician arrives only to find that Dan has instead sent another Anna—his occasional lover and photographer, Julia Roberts—unaware of the deception. Awkwardness fills the air as Larry feels foolish, but perhaps this seemingly distant Anna might be interested. What follows is a somewhat unbelievable sequence of events leading to an accidental group dynamic involving four people, which grows increasingly intimate, then affectionate, before spiraling into manipulative and damaging territory. Will any of these individuals find contentment with one another? Honestly, do they even merit it, and will we invest in their fates? I’ve always considered Owen a stiff performer, but surprisingly, he demonstrates acting ability here—particularly when sharing the screen with Portman, who is at her best. His character felt like the most unpleasant of the group. Portman truly shines; she embodies the role of a vulnerable woman seeking connection, shifting effortlessly between alluring and distressed. The script contains moments of sharp criticism, and the interwoven plot threads are handled briskly as this story about unlikeable characters progresses. I imagine it could be quite effective in a theatrical setting due to its inherent intensity, but on screen, it’s certainly worth seeing—even if it presents a rather bleak view of how people behave.
