A community suffers because of a ferocious wild boar, prompting the young Ashitaka to intervene. It becomes clear that the creature isn't normal, and during their encounter, he contracts a curse which necessitates a quest to seek out the great tree god for healing. His journey takes him to Lady Eboshi, who has created a method for producing guns, granting her power over other nearby groups and aiding in her ambition to destroy the gods and the wolves led by Princess Mononoke, whom they have nurtured since she was a baby. The narrative is compelling, the vibrant and intricate animation propels the story forward with energy, and it features well-developed characters and plenty of action sequences. As is typical with Miyazaki’s work, there's an underlying message—and the final twenty minutes illustrate this exceptionally well. The English dub features talented voice actors who bring personality and added feeling to the roles. I thought the forest spirits were a little too saccharine, but aside from that, it's a wonderful combination of imagination and folklore – and I thoroughly enjoyed watching it.
