It makes you wonder if filmmakers think the Vietnam era provides an especially entertaining backdrop for performers, given all the elements it allows—racism, violence, and snappy dialogue. Plus, the Russians are involved again! I was hoping Russell Crowe might have returned to that accent, maybe playing Tolstoy, but these Russian characters are effective villains. I found a great deal of enjoyment in the initial portion of the film. It offered an exceptional combination of silliness and excitement. However, as with all good things, this feeling didn’t last; the movie has difficulty maintaining its level of entertainment for the subsequent ninety minutes. Most of the key characters appear early on, and once the Cold War is over and a new power structure emerges, it becomes challenging to create fresh Russian antagonists. It seems to be part of a current tendency to portray Russians as Nazis—though weren't the Nazis German? Perhaps Russian Nazis are plausible, considering Putin isn’t a native English speaker. The sequence set in a tunnel was particularly memorable. It included jumping miniature dinosaurs, extended close-ups using a low camera angle, and plenty of gunfire. When you step back to see the bigger picture, though, the individual moments don't quite connect—you just have a group of people shooting at odd angles while superimposed dinosaurs are right in their line of sight, simply observing or leaping around. The moment when the T-Rex attacks is genuinely impactful and worth sticking around for.
