It had been quite some time since “Lucy” (Johnny Sequoyah) returned to her family's affluent home in Hawai’i, so her arrival with friend “Kate” (Victoria Wyant) and the less-than-enthusiastic “Hannah” (Jess Alexander) was anticipated by her deaf dad “Adam” (Troy Kotsur), her younger sister “Erin” (Gia Hunter), and particularly their pet chimpanzee “Ben.” Any initial apprehension about potential danger is lessened early on, as a brief explanation of hydrophobia’s risks appears. It's not difficult to understand what follows; the subsequent ninety minutes involve numerous people acting wildly. As with similar movies, I wasn't very invested in the human characters—they are fairly typical and would likely be tedious company at a social gathering. With the exception of the mostly unseen “Adam,” who did inject some charm into things, they all seemed to deserve their unpleasant ends, especially those three adolescent boys whose quick demise brought a chuckle. The story has numerous inconsistencies, and some of the conversations are quite dull, but in keeping with the style of Rudd Weatherwax, it’s the animal that delivers the strongest performances and had me hoping for his success. What's the takeaway? Perhaps just avoid combining a mongoose and a chimpanzee?
