After 13 months in state prison, a woman named Casey Gagliardi retrieves her husband, Andrew Joseph Montgomery, in Northern California. They quickly become lost within the woods, facing dangerous hunters and a violent creature, along with an odd, reclusive woman who dwells deep in the forest. "Primal Rage" (2018), occasionally referred to as “The Legend of Konga,” is a surprisingly effective Bigfoot movie, filmed on genuine woodland locations—listed below—and featuring a capable cast of unknown actors, impressive creature effects, excellent gore and overall quality. The cowriter/director, Patrick Magee, also makes sure to showcase Casey Gagliardi’s beauty in a tasteful way. The film possesses enough artistic merit to rise above typical Sasquatch horror fare. Those who enjoy intense thrillers set in deep forests, such as “The Edge” (1997), “Hold the Dark” (2018) and “Into the Grizzly Maze” (2015), will likely find much to appreciate. My main issues with it are that (1) the portrayal of the stereotypical hunters feels excessively exaggerated, pulling you out of the film’s reality, and (2) the story would have benefited from more focus on character development or emotional depth. For example, “Sasquatch Mountain,” also known as “Devil on the Mountain” (2006), manages to be genuinely touching despite its limited budget; similarly, "Wendigo" (2001) offers substantial spiritual themes through a subtle and intelligent approach. This film incorporates elements of both, which deserves recognition, but not in sufficient quantity. The conclusion feels similar to the one in “Abominable” (2006), leaving you feeling somewhat indifferent. I would place it on a similar level as "Exists" (2014), though with greater ambition and imagination. You simply need to disregard the cliché redneck characters and occasional attempts at humor, which didn’t bother me too much personally. The film's running time is 1 hour, 45 minutes, and was filmed in California (Smith River, Big Flat, Canyon Country, Crescent City, Fort Dick, Willow Creek, Santa Clarita & Los Angeles) and Oregon (Selma, Fall River, Cave Junction & Falls City).
