A university professor in Miami, portrayed by Bo Svenson, is conducting research focused on reviving brain cells through a serum, utilizing a baboon as part of the experimentation process. Following an accidental bite to a student, an infection quickly spreads across the campus during a Halloween event, leading to frightening and horrific occurrences. "Primal Rage," released in 1988, draws inspiration from “Pieces” (1982), incorporates ideas seen in the "Primal Scream" episode of Kolchak, and echoes themes found in “Altered States” (1980). Essentially, it's a modern update of “Monster on the Campus” (1958). Patrick Lowe delivers a solid performance as the central male character, while Mitch Watson is believable as the rebellious student journalist who bears a resemblance to John Lennon. The film is worth seeing for Cheryl Arutt’s portrayal of Lauren alone. Sarah Buxton also makes an impression in her role as Debbie. Doug Sloan is memorable as Lovejoy, the violent individual causing trouble on campus. The initial portion of the movie functions effectively, but the final act shifts into less substantial action sequences with a touch of horror elements added. Despite this, the soundtrack featuring unknown 1980s rock and metal music is energetic, and I’ve often been curious about what someone might have witnessed if they had been hidden beneath the bleachers during the rolling scene.
