While the film understandably concentrates on the two main actors, I believe a significant portion of what makes this Jane Austen narrative so appealing stems from the memorable supporting characters. Mary Boland is excellent as the mother, consistently and openly trying to secure beneficial marriages for her daughters, alongside Edmund Gwenn in that role. Melville Cooper’s portrayal of “Mr. Collins,” EE Clive as "Sir William," and Edna May Oliver's formidable performance as "Lady Catherine" all add considerably to what is otherwise a fairly free adaptation of the story involving "Elizabeth" (Greer Garson) and her complex, fluctuating relationship with "Mr. Darcy" (Laurence Olivier). This is definitely one of Olivier’s more enjoyable roles; despite still leaning into exaggerated acting, he does succeed in showing some of the humor within his character, as well as his difficulties—mostly brought on by himself—in attempting to win over his intended. Greer Garson has always been someone I feel hasn't received enough recognition. She would have likely excelled in silent films; she possessed the eyes and the way of moving that could communicate what countless words might express, and she maintains audience interest effectively as the spirited, self-sufficient "Elizabeth." The other sisters also get their moments—Ann Rutherford ("Lydia") and Maureen O’Sullivan ("Jane") both deliver solid performances as they pursue their own romantic interests. This adaptation, overseen by Aldous Huxley, trims some of Austen's characteristic verbosity, which helps to sharpen the narrative, though perhaps at a slight reduction in its original impact and bite. I don't typically care for this type of story or this particular writer—but this is enjoyable and well-crafted with strong acting, lavish scenery, and considerable appeal. It’s easily the finest version of this tale that has appeared on film, as far as I can tell.
