Reno on Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

7/10 · Dec 14, 2016

I was surprised to discover that there’s a comedic reimagining of Jane Austen's well-known story, adapted into a movie with several recognizable actors. Unfortunately, the film didn't quite live up to its potential due to the cast not having enough impact. The storyline is familiar territory, and while zombies are incorporated, it wasn’t sufficient to elevate the experience. A few more prominent performances might have saved it from being a box office failure. However, I believe the movie was decent overall—acceptable with impressive production design and acting. The ending suggested a possible sequel, but I doubt one will materialize. The narrative felt somewhat foreseeable; in fact, I anticipated some of the plot points, especially concerning Wickham's character arc. I was more intrigued by how the zombies would be integrated into the story, and they were quite well done. They weren’t overly emphasized, but their inclusion definitely contributed to a solid storyline. The action sequences were executed skillfully, avoiding excessive blood or gore, which is why it received a PG13 rating with a violence warning. I feel that film critics responded too harshly, as they often do, simply echoing each other's opinions and labeling the movie as unsuccessful. As someone who enjoys films, I don’t think it should be dismissed, particularly for those who appreciate the original story. These days, critics seem more like entertainers than insightful commentators. So, I encourage you to decide for yourself whether or not to see this film, regardless of my opinion or what the critics say. 6.5/10
