TrentTX on Pride and Prejudice

10/10 · Aug 31, 2017

As someone who enjoys Jane Austen's work and particularly loves *Pride and Prejudice*, I often watch different film versions. This adaptation proved quite pleasant, especially for those familiar with Austen’s writing. The filmmakers took some interesting liberties in how they presented the story, and I found their choices to be worthwhile. While there seems to be a link to Mormon culture, it didn't really impact my enjoyment of the movie; I don’t recall the word "Mormon" being used, and the church scene could easily apply to any contemporary place of worship. Including religious figures actually helped reinforce the characters’ adherence to values common in Austen’s time. A key pleasure with *Pride and Prejudice* movies is seeing how the personalities are portrayed, and I felt that these characters were true to their literary counterparts regarding their reasons for acting as they do. The absence of Mr. and Mrs. Bennett was a letdown, though it's likely due to financial constraints. Lady Catherine doesn’t appear either; instead, Caroline Bingley handles some of the conflict that character would have generated. I can certainly suggest this film to people who like the book. It isn’t my favorite—I still prefer the version starring Keira Knightley—but it's an enjoyable watch nonetheless.
