I suppose I should begin by saying this film proved to be a bit superior to some of the more recent Predator films, though that isn't exactly a high bar to clear so it doesn’t really mean much. In my opinion, this movie comes across as fairly average. The visuals are acceptable; I enjoyed most of the footage. Regarding the story, I found the first portion of the film rather dull, actually. There were a few short scenes involving a wolf and later a bear that contained some action sequences, but mostly the main character spent her time looking dejected and complaining while attempting to appear as though she deserved to be considered a great warrior. It’s somewhat unrealistic, naturally, since Hollywood cast a woman in the role. I don't really object to it, mind you, but at the time this film is set, whether Hollywood wants to portray it differently or not, women—Native American or otherwise—typically stayed home and did housework. I am still okay with that aspect, however, she spends a lot of time dropping things and tripping, and when danger arises, she flees and seems frightened. This isn't the kind of commanding presence I was hoping for in the main character. When it finally starts to become more engaging, she accidentally steps into a gruesome animal trap and is captured by a hunting group. The latter, predictably, is depicted as the standard Hollywood portrayal of “white men being bad.” Minor details like having your foot trapped in that type of steel snare would effectively incapacitate you for the remainder of the movie; those realities are, of course, overlooked. The second half of the film does offer some action, although it’s lessened by the main character's continued sadness and the fact that when she finally gets an opportunity to take a shot, she just stares blankly for about thirty seconds, and then the chance is lost. On the positive side, the actors do a pretty good job with the subpar script they were given, and as I mentioned earlier, the film looks quite nice visually. The action sequences are well-executed, if you can disregard the Hollywood absurdities and the underwhelming main character. Ultimately, the movie is watchable and, as I’ve stated, better than previous entries in the series, but that's all there is to it.
